Is There a ‘One-Stop Inheritance Service’ in the U.S.?
How to Find a Deceased Family Member’s Bank Accounts, Insurance & Hidden Assets

Like Korea’s one-stop inheritance service, the U.S. also offers free government tools to find a decedent’s hidden assets. But here the process is split by the asset’s type, location, and the heir’s legal authority. This guide focuses on California, Utah, and Texas.

After a loved one passes away, the family faces not only grief but practical problems. These are questions we hear often in consultations.

I don’t know which bank my parents had accounts with.

My father had life insurance, but we can’t find the insurer.

There may be money in my late husband’s name, but the bank won’t tell us.

Korea has a one-stop inheritance service — does the U.S. have one too?

In Korea, the government’s “one-stop inheritance service” lets heirs request a decedent’s financial, land, vehicle, tax, and pension information through a single application. So can you check a deceased family member’s assets all at once through a U.S. bank or government website?

The short answer: the U.S. does have free government tools to find a decedent’s hidden assets. But unlike Korea, you must pursue several procedures separately, depending on the asset’s type, location, and the heir’s legal authority. California, Utah, and Texas each run an unclaimed-property search, yet the legal steps to actually transfer assets to heirs differ in important ways.

How does Korea’s one-stop service differ from the U.S.?

Korea’s one-stop service lets heirs make a single, combined request for a decedent’s asset information through Gov24 or the local authority. The U.S. is structured differently: banks hold account information, counties hold real-property title, state governments hold unclaimed property, and insurers or financial firms hold life insurance and retirement accounts. As a result, there is no single U.S. window that searches all of these at once.

⚠ A distinction you must make In the U.S., “finding” an asset and “legally inheriting” it are two different things. Even if you find a $30,000 account in a late parent’s name, being “the child” alone does not let you withdraw it. The bank checks joint ownership, beneficiary designations, trust arrangements, and the authority of any court-appointed estate administrator. This distinction is the starting point of U.S. inheritance.

You can find a deceased family member’s hidden assets for free

The first tool to check is the Unclaimed Property Search. Certain financial assets that have been dormant or could not be paid to their owner may, under state law, be turned over to the state and held. These commonly include:

  • Long-dormant bank accounts and deposits
  • Unpaid wages and checks
  • Uncollected insurance proceeds and refunds
  • Stocks, dividends, and certain investment assets
  • Utility or rental-deposit refunds
  • Certain contents left in a safe-deposit box
⚠ Note Not every dormant account passes to the state immediately; it depends on the asset type, the dormancy period, and the institution’s legal duties. And no results in a state database does not mean the decedent had no other assets.

Using official state property-search services: what to watch for
  • The California/Utah/Texas searches are official, free state services, and anyone can start a search using the decedent’s name.
  • But finding a result does not automatically grant an heir ownership or the right to withdraw. Actual return may require a death certificate, proof of heirship, a will, trust documents, or court letters appointing an estate administrator.
  • Submit sensitive information such as ID and Social Security Number only through the state’s official, secure channel; beware of emails or texts impersonating the state, and of upfront-fee demands.
  • Above all, these services search mainly property already turned over to the state. They do not jointly search all of a decedent’s bank accounts, real estate, insurance, and investments.
  • If there are multiple heirs, a will or living trust, or heirs split between the U.S. and Korea, it is important to review who is legally entitled to claim and the relevant state’s process before filing.

7 things to know before using a free asset search

A free search is a useful starting point, but “free” does not mean you can receive assets with no legal issues. Confirm the following.

1
Confirm it is the official site

MissingMoney.com is a NAUPA-endorsed service, but copycat sites exist. Type the official address yourself, and at the claim stage confirm you are on the state’s own site.

2
Beware upfront fees

Official searches and claims are free. Be cautious if someone demands a processing or wire fee upfront to “find” assets. Legitimate private finders do exist — verify scope, fees, and state law before signing.

3
Guard your personal data

A search can begin with a name and old address, but a claim may require ID, SSN, a death certificate, and proof of heirship. Use only official, secure channels; never enter data on an unknown link.

4
Found ≠ inherited

Assets in a parent’s name are not paid out automatically just because you are the child. Legal authority must be confirmed — a will, trust documents, letters of administration, or a Small Estate Affidavit may be required.

5
No result ≠ no assets

Active accounts, trust assets, real estate, and all insurance/retirement accounts are not necessarily searchable. Also review former addresses, bank statements, insurance papers, and property records.

6
Respect other heirs’ rights

Finding assets does not let one person take everything. With siblings, a spouse, or a blended family, the right to claim and the final distribution must be assessed separately. Standing to claim and final ownership can differ.

7
Check debts and taxes too

Rather than distributing right away, you may first need to review creditor claims, tax obligations, and administration costs. Family status alone does not make you personally liable for all debts, but an administrator who distributes without proper process can face liability.

A note from the attorney — a free search is a useful step anyone can start. But finding assets and lawfully inheriting them are different matters. Especially where assets are split across California, Utah, and Texas, or where a family member in Korea must inherit U.S. assets, first confirm which state’s law and process apply.  Book a consultation with Attorney Chong →

Life insurance when you don’t even know the insurer?

Life insurance is often missed in an asset search. A parent who lived in the U.S. for 30+ years may have bought a policy long ago, yet the family knows neither the insurer nor the policy number. Here you can use the NAIC (National Association of Insurance Commissioners) Life Insurance Policy Locator.

NAIC is a nonprofit body of the state insurance regulators; through its official site you can request a search for a decedent’s unknown life or annuity policies. Once you submit the decedent’s details, participating insurers check for policies and, if you are a qualified beneficiary, the insurer contacts you directly. Not all policies are found, and not all policy information is disclosed. →

However, finding a policy does not mean every heir can collect. The right to the proceeds is determined by the policy’s beneficiary designation, its terms, and applicable law.

One important legal point: life insurance proceeds do not necessarily pass through probate. With a valid beneficiary designation, the proceeds generally go directly to the named beneficiary. But if there is no beneficiary, or the decedent named their own estate, separate legal review is needed. The person entitled to the proceeds and the heir named in a will are not always the same.
⚠ When legal review may be needed If the beneficiary has died, the insurer denies payment, a trust conflicts with the policy, or heirs are in dispute, review by a U.S. estate attorney may be necessary.

You found the account, but the bank won’t release the money

It is easy to assume a death certificate and proof of family relationship are enough to access an account. But U.S. institutions verify legal authority to protect a decedent’s information and assets. Handling depends on the account type.

Joint account

Joint Account

With valid survivorship rights, it can pass to the surviving joint owner without probate. But being “joint” alone does not mean every account is treated the same.

Payable on Death

Payable on Death (POD)

With a valid beneficiary named, that beneficiary can receive the funds by submitting the required proof.

Individual account

Individual

With no joint owner and no valid beneficiary, a Small Estate procedure or court-appointed administrator may be required, depending on the amount and state law.

In short, knowing the money exists does not create the legal authority to withdraw it. If a bank refuses information or payment, rather than rushing to sue, first identify which legal authority is missing.

How different are the small-estate procedures across CA, UT, and TX?

Depending on the size and type of the estate, the residence, and whether there is a will, a simplified procedure that avoids full probate may be allowed. But the three states’ thresholds differ.

Utah

Small Estate Affidavit threshold. Requirements include having no real property.
Texas
$75,000
Small Estate Affidavit threshold — value excluding homestead/exempt property; applies to intestacy, among other conditions.

📌 As of October 2026. Do not judge eligibility by the dollar amount alone.

California — Probate Code §§13100–13106 allows transferring personal property such as bank deposits and stock without full administration when requirements are met. For deaths on/after April 1, 2025 the statutory cap is $208,850, and at least 40 days must pass after death. A 2025 revision also allows, for a qualifying primary residence, a separate court petition up to $750,000. This does not transfer the home automatically and differs from the affidavit used for ordinary bank accounts.

Utah — Under Utah Code §75-3-1201, a Small Estate Affidavit may be used for certain small estates. Key requirements: estate under $100,000, no real property, at least 30 days after death, and no pending appointment of an administrator. The affidavit is usually notarized and presented to the institution holding the asset (e.g., a bank) rather than filed with a court. If real property is involved or heirs dispute, additional procedures such as probate may be needed.

Texas — Estates Code Chapter 205 allows a Small Estate Affidavit when someone dies without a will (intestate) and the estate meets certain conditions. Typical requirements: 30 days after death, estate value (excluding exempt property) of $75,000 or less, debt-related conditions, and court approval.

Texas has a special bank-information rule. Under Estates Code §153.003, a qualified interested party of someone who died without a will may, 90 days after death and if conditions are met, ask a court to order disclosure of financial-institution account balances. This is not a general right making a bank disclose everything; POD accounts, certain trust accounts, and survivorship accounts are excluded.

In all three states, a small estate does not automatically mean a simple process. You must first analyze how the asset is legally held and who has authority as an heir.

Where to start when actually searching for assets

Rather than randomly contacting every institution after a death, this order helps.

Gather decedent and heirship documents

Secure the death certificate, English name, former addresses, will, trust documents, heirship proof, and existing financial papers. Korean-issued documents may need English translation and extra certification, depending on the institution.

2

Search state and national unclaimed property

Check the official sites of states where the decedent lived or did business, plus MissingMoney.

3

Investigate life insurance and financial assets

Use the NAIC locator, known banks and brokerages, and the employer’s retirement-plan administrator. Avoid unauthorized logins or account access.

4

Research real estate and debts

Check the county Recorder/Clerk records, property title and tax data, and known debts. Review liabilities and taxes, not just assets.

5

Decide the actual transfer procedure

Small Estate Affidavit · Probate · Trust Administration ·

Determine which is legally available — Small Estate Affidavit, probate, trust administration, or a direct beneficiary claim — and appoint an administrator if needed.

Situations where you should consult an estate attorney

Sometimes a free search is enough. But in the following situations, ownership and transfer methods deserve careful review.

  • The bank refuses an heir’s information request — confirm whether heirship alone suffices or a court-appointed administrator is required.
  • There is a will or living trust — property named in a will and property actually funded into a trust can differ.
  • Heirs disagree — withdrawing or distributing unilaterally can lead to clawback claims and disputes.
  • Assets exist in both Korea and the U.S. — review which country’s/state’s law applies and how a Korean heir can claim U.S. assets.
  • There is real estate or a business — unlike a simple account transfer, ownership, debt, tax, and business-interest/control issues can arise together.

In particular, for an heir living in Korea who must inherit U.S. assets, what often matters more than citizenship or a green card is heirship, how the asset is legally held, the required court process, and applicable tax law. U.S. inheritance is not merely about who gets how much; it is also the legal process of deciding who has authority to investigate and manage the assets, and to whom they must ultimately transfer.

(FAQ)Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Korean citizen not living in the U.S. search for a parent’s U.S. assets?
Yes. Living in Korea does not, by itself, bar inheritance rights. But the search and claim require heirship and proof under the relevant state’s law, and procedures vary by asset type.
Can I search without knowing my parent’s Social Security Number?
State unclaimed-property sites let you start with a name or former address. The final claim, however, may require additional documents to verify identity and ownership.
Can I find assets even 10 years after a parent’s death?
Sometimes yes. Unclaimed property held by a state can often be claimed by an eligible party even many years later. But the same rules do not apply to every asset or claim, and separate issues like probate deadlines or statutes of limitation may arise.
Without a will, can I still inherit money in a U.S. bank?
You can. Even without a will, an eligible heir may receive assets under the state’s intestate succession rules. The required procedure depends on the asset’s type and size.
Do I have to hire a lawyer just to search for assets?
No. You can start the state unclaimed-property search and the NAIC locator yourself, for free. But if an institution refuses payment, or a court process, trust interpretation, or heir dispute is involved, an attorney’s review can help.

What matters more than ‘finding’ is ‘properly inheriting’

Finding what a family left behind is not just a financial search. The procedure and final distribution change depending on which bank held the account, who the insurance beneficiary is, how real property is titled, and whether a will or trust exists. Heirs in Korea, not only family in the U.S., can face these issues.

“Not knowing where the assets are does not mean you have no right to inherit. But finding the assets does not necessarily give you the authority to withdraw or own them.”

So if the decedent’s finances are unclear, a bank won’t share information with heirs, or inheritance spans Korea and the U.S., it is important to review the applicable law and required steps early.
