As President Donald Trump follows through on his campaign promises to crack down on immigration, questions remain about the future of skilled workers coming to the U.S. on H-1B visas. Trump targeted the H-1B visa program during his first term with the "Buy American, Hire American" executive order to limit potential abuses. However, ahead of his second term, he told the New York Post that he "always liked the visas," which U.S. companies use to hire foreign workers with specialized skills, particularly in science and technology. “I’ve been a believer in H-1B,” Trump said. “I have used it many times. It’s a great program.”
Despite this, the program’s future remains uncertain. Recently, two Republican senators introduced a resolution to strike down a Biden-era rule that automatically extended H-1B visas for 540 days, instead of 180 days.
In light of this uncertainty, Business Insider analyzed which U.S. financial services companies might be most affected if these visas were restricted again. The analysis, based on data from the Department of Labor and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, focused on the largest banks, credit card companies, and asset managers that file the most H-1B visa requests. Data covered the 2024 government fiscal year (October 2023–September 2024), showing which firms are most active in sponsoring these visas.
